英文原文 A2
Odyssey means "a long journey with adventures." It started with the adventures of Odysseus. The Odyssey is a story about Odysseus's hard ten-year trip back to Ithaca after the fall of Troy. It is one of the oldest books ever, written in Ancient Greek, and maybe from 700 BC. People think Homer wrote it, but we don't know much about his life.
On his trip, Odysseus had storms and problems from gods like Athena, Zeus, Hermes, and Poseidon. People started using "odyssey" for any long journey in the late 1800s. The word was in Old English too, as the name of the story.
"Odyssey" comes from Odysseus's name. Some people think his name means "hated by gods and men," which is like "hatred" in English. This idea is like the story—it's a good story, but we can't really prove it.
