Hello, this is 6 Minute English from BBC Learning English. I'm Neil.

你好,这是 BBC Learning English 的《六分钟英语》。我是尼尔。
And I'm Georgie. In English, there are many ways to describe smells. Poet Michael Rosen wanted to find words describing bad smells, and asked listeners of his BBC Radio 4 programme Word of Mouth for some suggestions.

我是乔治。在英语中,有很多方式可以描述气味。诗人迈克尔·罗森想找到描述难闻气味的词,于是向他的 BBC Radio 4 节目《Word of Mouth》的听众征求建议。
Fusty, reeking, toiking, honking, humming, funky…

陈腐的、恶臭的、发臭的、刺鼻的、嗡嗡的、发霉的……
Smells are everywhere, whether they're bad smells like rotten eggs and sweaty feet, or pleasant ones like lavender and freshly baked bread. What smells do you especially like or dislike, Georgie?
显示翻译
气味无处不在,无论是像臭鸡蛋和臭脚那样的难闻气味,还是像薰衣草和刚出炉的面包那样令人愉悦的气味。乔治,你特别喜欢或讨厌什么气味?
Well, I really enjoy the smell of leather, but something I really love is the smell of rain, which has a name. Do you know it, Neil?
显示翻译
嗯,我真的很喜欢皮革的气味,但我特别爱闻雨后的气味,这有一个名字。你知道它吗,尼尔?
Erm, I don't think I do actually.
显示翻译
呃,我想我不知道。
It's called petrichor. It's that smell of the ground just after it's rained.
显示翻译
它叫 petrichor(潮土油)。那是雨后地面上的那种气味。
Mmm.
显示翻译
嗯。
Neil, what about you? Which smells do you like?
显示翻译
尼尔,你呢?你喜欢什么气味?
Well, I don't think you can beat the smell of a freshly opened packet of ground coffee.
显示翻译
嗯,我觉得没有什么气味能比得过刚打开的速溶咖啡的气味。
Ooh, that's a good one. In this episode, we'll be learning the language of smells using some useful new words and phrases. And remember, you can find all the

But first, I have a question for you, Georgie. One smell many people love is the smell of old books and the sentimental feeling it gives them for second-hand bookshops. In fact, there's even a word for it, but what is it? Is it: a) vellichor, b) petrichor, or c) nidor?
显示翻译
但首先,我有一个问题要问你,乔治。许多人喜欢旧书的气味,以及这给他们带来的对二手书店的怀旧感。事实上,甚至有一个词专门形容它,但这个词是什么?是:a) vellichor,b) petrichor,还是 c) nidor?
Well, we already know that petrichor is the smell of the ground after rain. I'm going to go with a) vellichor.
显示翻译
嗯,我们已经知道 petrichor 是雨后地面的气味。我要选 a) vellichor。
Well, we'll find out at the end of the programme. Listening to Michael Rosen's list – funky, reeking, humming and the rest – you might think English is good at describing smells, but in fact, all those words really mean is bad smelling.
显示翻译
好的,我们将在节目最后揭晓答案。听着迈克尔·罗森的列表——funk、reek、humming 等等——你可能会觉得英语很擅长描述气味,但实际上,所有这些词的意思都只是“难闻”。
In English, we often describe smells by comparing them to other objects. For example, something nice might smell like a rose, while something bad might smell like rotten eggs, but there are few words to describe the actual smell itself.
显示翻译
在英语中,我们经常通过将气味与其他物体进行比较来描述它。例如,好的东西可能闻起来像玫瑰,而坏的东西可能闻起来像臭鸡蛋,但很少有词能描述气味本身。
Oxford University psychologist Asifa Majid has researched the subject of smell extensively. Here, she tells Michael Rosen a little of what she's found out on BBC Radio 4 programme Word of Mouth.
显示翻译
牛津大学的心理学家阿西法·马吉德对气味这一课题进行了广泛研究。在这里,她在 BBC Radio 4 节目《Word of Mouth》中向迈克尔·罗森讲述了一些她的发现。
So, if we think about things like stinky or fragrant, they're definitely telling us that something is good or bad. But unlike colour terms, it doesn't really seem to be about the object it's describing. It seems to be a subjective thing. I could say, "Oh this perfume you think is really fragrant, I think is stinky," and both can be true.
显示翻译
所以,如果我们想到像 stinky 或 fragrant 这样的词,它们肯定是在告诉我们某样东西是好还是坏。但与颜色术语不同,它似乎并不是在描述它所描述的物体本身。这似乎是一种主观的东西。我可以说,“哦,你觉得这个香水很香,但我觉得很臭,”这两者都是对的。
Describing smell is not like describing other senses. I might think a perfume is stinky, an adjective meaning bad smelling, while Neil might find the same perfume fragrant, meaning pleasant smelling. Both can be true. The point is that neither stinky nor fragrant say anything specific about the perfume's actual smell.
显示翻译
描述气味不像描述其他感官。我可能觉得一个香水很 stinky(难闻的),这是一个形容词,而尼尔可能会觉得同一个香水很 fragrant(香喷喷的),这意味着令人愉悦的气味。两者都是对的。关键是,stinky 和 fragrant 都没有具体说明香水的实际气味。
With our sense of taste, it's different. Words like spicy, sweet or salty create a common idea that we can all agree on, but that's not the case for smells. Asifa thinks this is because, unlike tastes and colours, smell words are subjective – they're based on personal opinions and feelings rather than objective truth.
显示翻译
对于我们的味觉来说,情况就不同了。像 spicy、sweet 或 salty 这样的词创造了一个我们可以达成共识的共同概念,但气味不是这样。阿西法认为这是因为,与味觉和颜色不同,气味词是主观的——它们基于个人观点和感受,而不是客观事实。
This might explain why our attitude to talking about smells is so different. Here's Asifa again, sharing some examples of how we talk about smells with BBC Radio 4.
显示翻译
这可能解释了为什么我们对谈论气味的态度如此不同。这是阿西法再次在 BBC Radio 4 分享的一些关于我们如何谈论气味的例子。
So, if we compare how often people talk about visual things, or auditory things, or tastes or smells, what we find is we talk a lot about what we see and very rarely about what we smell. Young children in the UK are often interested in the sense of smell and they'll remark on it, and the parent will shut it down. They'll say, "That's disgusting! Put it down."
显示翻译
所以,如果我们比较人们谈论视觉事物、听觉事物、味觉或气味的频率,我们会发现我们经常谈论我们看到的东西,而很少谈论我们闻到的东西。英国的孩子们经常对嗅觉感兴趣,他们会对此发表评论,但家长会制止他们。他们会说:“真恶心!放下它。”
Asifa's research shows that, here in the UK at least, people talk about visual or auditory things much more than they talk about smells. The adjective visual means related to seeing, and auditory means related to hearing. The adjective for things related to smelling is olfactory.
显示翻译
阿西法的研究表明,至少在英国,人们谈论视觉或听觉事物的频率远高于谈论气味的频率。形容词 visual 意味着与视觉有关,auditory 意味着与听觉有关。与嗅觉有关的形容词是 olfactory。
Maybe this is because of how we're raised by our parents. When children start talking about smells, especially unpleasant ones, parents often react by shutting the conversation down. The phrase to shut something down means to stop it.
显示翻译
也许这是因为我们是由父母抚养长大的方式造成的。当孩子们开始谈论气味,尤其是难闻的气味时,父母通常会通过停止对话来制止。短语 to shut something down 意味着停止它。
Along with other European languages, English doesn't have much vocabulary dedicated to the different qualities of actual smells. There are many ways of talking about smells, especially unpleasant ones, but only a few words which describe actual smells themselves. A good example of a word which does this is musty – a damp, stale smell you might find in an old bookshop. And Neil, that reminds me of your question.
显示翻译
与其他欧洲语言一样,英语没有太多词汇专门用于描述气味的不同品质。有很多方式可以谈论气味,尤其是难闻的气味,但只有很少的词能描述气味本身。一个很好的例子是 musty——一种你可能在一间旧书店里发现的潮湿、陈旧的气味。还有尼尔,这让我想起了你的问题。
That's right. I asked you what the word is, which means the smell of old books.
显示翻译
没错。我问你那个词是什么,意思是旧书的气味。
I said it was vellichor.
显示翻译
我说是 vellichor。
Well, Georgie, you are absolutely right.
显示翻译
好的,乔治,你完全正确。
Yay!
显示翻译
耶!
Petrichor, as you said earlier, is the smell of the earth after rain. And nidor is the smell of cooking meat and fat. OK. It's time for a recap of the vocabulary we've learned. The adjective stinky means foul smelling, while the adjective fragrant means pleasant smelling.
显示翻译
正如你之前所说,petrichor 是雨后大地的气味。而 nidor 是烹饪肉和脂肪的气味。好了。是时候回顾一下我们学到的词汇了。形容词 stinky 意味着难闻的气味,而形容词 fragrant 意味着令人愉悦的气味。
Subjective things are based on your own personal opinions and feelings rather than objective facts.
显示翻译
主观事物是基于你自己的个人观点和感受,而不是客观事实。
The adjective visual describes things related to seeing, while auditory means related to hearing. Things related to smelling are called olfactory.
显示翻译
形容词 visual 描述与视觉有关的事物,而 auditory 意味着与听觉有关。与嗅觉有关的事物被称为 olfactory。
And finally, the phrasal verb to shut something down means to stop it. Once again, our six minutes are up, but there's still time to head over to our website, we've discussed. See you again soon! But for now, it's goodbye.
显示翻译
最后,短语动词 to shut something down 意味着停止它。我们的六分钟又到了,但还有时间去我们的网站,我们讨论过的那个网站。很快再见!但现在,再见。
Goodbye!
