Neil

Hello, this is 6 Minute English from BBC Learning English. I'm Neil.

显示翻译

你好,这是 BBC Learning English 的 6 分钟英语。我是 Neil。

Pippa

And I'm Pippa. Sharing your Netflix password, lying about your age or not paying the bus fare are a few examples of cheating in daily life. But there's one place where cheating is usually considered wrong, and that's sport.

我是 Pippa。分享你的 Netflix 密码、撒谎关于你的年龄或者不付公交车费都是日常生活中作弊的例子。但有一个地方作弊通常被认为是错误的,那就是运动。

Neil

Cheating in sport through the use of performance-enhancing drugs, informally called doping, is normally considered wrong. Just ask American cycling legend Lance Armstrong, who was thrown out of the sport for using banned substances. But earlier this year, a sporting event took place which turned the debate about drugs in sport upside down. Here's Asma Khalid from BBC World Service's The Global Story to explain:

在运动中通过使用提高性能的药物,非正式地称为兴奋剂,通常被认为是错误的。问问美国自行车传奇人物 Lance Armstrong,他因为使用禁用物质而被逐出运动。但今年早些时候,一项体育赛事发生了,它颠覆了关于运动中药物的辩论。这里是 BBC World Service 的 The Global Story 的 Asma Khalid 来解释:

This weekend, elite athletes from around the world are descending on Las Vegas, Nevada, for the first-of-its-kind sporting competition known as The Enhanced Games. It's kind of like the Olympics, but only for swimming, sprinting and weightlifting. The aim is to break world records. In fact, some of these competitors are former Olympians – medallists battling it out for money and glory. But there's one big difference...

本周末,来自世界各地的精英运动员将聚集在内华达州的拉斯维加斯,参加首届名为 The Enhanced Games 的体育比赛。它有点像奥运会,但只针对游泳、短跑和举重。目标是打破世界纪录。事实上,一些参赛者曾是奥运金牌得主——他们在为金钱和荣耀而战。但有一个很大的不同...

Pippa

The big difference is that The Enhanced Games allow athletes to use performance- enhancing drugs that are banned in professional sports. In these games, nicknamed The Doping Olympics, steroids, growth hormones and stimulants are all OK. You're a big sports fan, Neil. Would you enjoy watching a sport where the athletes have taken drugs?

显示翻译

最大的不同是 The Enhanced Games 允许运动员使用在专业运动中被禁止的提高性能的药物。在这些比赛中,被称为 The Doping Olympics,类固醇、生长激素和兴奋剂都是允许的。你是个大体育迷,Neil。你会喜欢看运动员服用药物的体育比赛吗?

Neil

No, I wouldn't. I really don't think that's fair. I think we need to know that all the athletes start and compete from the same level.

显示翻译

不,我不会。我真的认为这不公平。我认为我们需要知道所有运动员都是从同一个水平开始和竞争的。

Pippa

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I don't really watch that many sports so I guess I wouldn't notice the difference, but if you're really into sport you care about the rules, right?

显示翻译

是的,我想这很有道理。我并不真的看很多体育,所以我想我不会注意到区别,但如果你真的很喜欢体育,你会关心规则的,对吧?

Neil

Yes, absolutely. And in this episode we'll dive into the controversial world of The Enhanced Games, learning some useful new words and phrases along the way. And remember, you'll find all the vocabulary, plus a quiz and a worksheet, on our

显示翻译

是的,绝对如此。在本期节目中,我们将深入了解有争议的 The Enhanced Games,同时学习一些有用的新单词和短语。记住,你可以在我们的网站上找到所有词汇,还有测验和练习。

Pippa

But now I have a question for you, Neil. You mentioned the famous sporting cheat Lance Armstrong, but how many times did Lance Armstrong win the famous race, the Tour de France, before he was finally caught out? Was it: a) five, b) six, or c) seven?

显示翻译

现在,我有一个问题要问你,Neil。你提到了著名的体育骗子 Lance Armstrong,但 Lance Armstrong 在最终被抓住之前赢得了著名的比赛 Tour de France 多少次?是:a) 五次,b) 六次,还是 c) 七次?

Neil

Ooh... Well, it was a lot, so I think I'll go for c) seven.

显示翻译

哦...嗯,很多次,所以我想我会选择 c) 七次。

Pippa

Well, we'll find out the answer at the end of the programme. Now, it's no exaggeration to say that The Enhanced Games are controversial. After all, organisations like the World Anti-Doping Agency have spent decades fighting performance-enhancing drugs in sport. Here's BBC sports editor Dan Roan on World Service programme The Global Story.

显示翻译

嗯,我们将在节目结束时找到答案。现在,可以说 The Enhanced Games 是有争议的。毕竟,像世界反兴奋剂机构这样的组织已经花费了几十年时间在运动中打击提高性能的药物。这里是 BBC 体育编辑 Dan Roan 在 World Service 节目 The Global Story 中的观点。

Dan Roan

I think it's fair to say it's one of the most divisive and controversial events that the world of sport has seen for a long time. It's an event where performance-enhancing drugs, banned elsewhere in mainstream sport of course, are actually allowed to be taken by the competitors under medical supervision.

显示翻译

我认为可以说 The Enhanced Games 是有史以来体育界最具争议性的事件之一。这是一个在主流体育中被禁止的兴奋剂实际上在医疗监督下被允许由参赛者使用的比赛。

Neil

Dan Roan says, "It's fair to say The Enhanced Games are controversial." He uses the phrase it's fair to say to introduce a statement that he considers to be balanced and reasonable – that the games are controversial.

显示翻译

Dan Roan 说,'可以说 The Enhanced Games 是有争议的'。他使用 it's fair to say 来引入一个他认为平衡、合理或真实的陈述——即比赛是有争议的。

Pippa

Dan also describes the games as divisive – an adjective that means causing a lot of disagreement between people. Much of this disagreement is about the use of performance-enhancing drugs themselves. The Games' organisers point out that all drugs are approved by the US Food and Drug Agency and taken openly under medical supervision, which they say makes them safer than when they are taken secretly at competitions elsewhere. But there are many critics too, as Dan Roan outlined to BBC World Service's The Global Story.

显示翻译

Dan 也把比赛描述为分裂性的——一个形容词,意味着在人们之间引起很多分歧。这种分歧的大部分是关于提高性能的药物本身。比赛的组织者指出,所有药物都经过美国食品药品监督管理局批准,并在医疗监督下公开服用,他们说这比在别处秘密服用的更安全。但也有很多批评者,正如 Dan Roan 在 BBC World Service 的 The Global Story 中概述的那样。

Dan Roan

But the critics, of course, say that this crosses an ethical line, that it sets a dreadful example because it risks normalising doping. It could harm the integrity, therefore, of sport, and it could be dangerous to the health of those taking part.

显示翻译

当然,批评者认为这越过了道德底线,它树立了一个糟糕的榜样,因为它可能会使兴奋剂正常化。它可能会危害体育的完整性,并且可能对参赛者的健康造成危险。

Neil

For the Games' critics, doping crosses an ethical line. The phrase to cross the line means to start behaving in a way that's not socially acceptable. These critics say the Games set a bad example, meaning that they encourage others to behave badly as well. Why is that, Pippa?

显示翻译

对于比赛的批评者来说,兴奋剂越过了道德底线。短语 to cross the line 意味着开始以不可接受的方式行事。这些批评者说比赛树立了一个坏的榜样,意味着它会鼓励其他人也以不良的方式行事。这是为什么,Pippa?

Pippa

Well, it's because critics argue the games normalise the use of performance drugs in sport. If you normalise something, you treat it as normal or acceptable when previously it wasn't. But with arguments strongly held on both sides, the debate is far from over. So Neil, have you changed your opinion after hearing both sides of the story?

显示翻译

嗯,这是因为批评者认为比赛使体育中提高性能药物的使用正常化。如果你使某事正常化,你将其视为正常或可接受的,而之前它并不是。但双方都有强烈的论点,辩论远未结束。所以 Neil,你在听到双方的故事后改变了你的观点吗?

Neil

No, I haven't. I think it's just not fair, and I think if you're not fair in sport, what's the point?

显示翻译

没有,我没有。我认为这根本就不公平,如果体育中不公平,那还有什么意义?

Pippa

Well, let's hear the answer to my quiz question, Neil. I asked you how many times Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France, and it was c) seven times, consecutively between 1999 and 2005. Of course, we now know that there were performance- enhancing drugs involved.

显示翻译

嗯,现在让我们听听我测验问题的答案,Neil。我问你 Lance Armstrong 赢了著名的 Tour de France 多少次,答案是 c) 七次,连续七次,从 1999 年到 2005 年。当然,我们现在知道其中涉及了提高性能的药物。

Neil

OK. So, now it's time to recap the vocabulary we've learned, starting with doping – using banned drugs to perform better in sporting competitions.

显示翻译

好的。所以,现在是我们回顾我们学到的词汇的时候了,从 doping 开始——使用禁用药物在体育比赛中表现更好。

Pippa

You can use the phrase it's fair to say to introduce a statement you consider to be balanced, reasonable or true.

显示翻译

你可以使用 it's fair to say 来引入一个你认为平衡、合理或真实的陈述。

Neil

If something is divisive, it causes disagreement between people.

显示翻译

如果某事是分裂性的,它会在人们之间引起分歧。

Pippa

The idiom cross the line means to start behaving in an unacceptable way.

显示翻译

习语 cross the line 意味着开始以不可接受的方式行事。

Neil

If you set a bad example, you behave in a way that encourages others to behave badly.

显示翻译

如果你树立了一个坏的榜样,你的行为会鼓励其他人也以不良的方式行事。

Pippa

And finally, to normalise something means to treat it as normal or acceptable when previously it wasn't.

显示翻译

最后,to normalise 意味着将某事视为正常或可接受的,而之前它并不是。

Neil

OK. Once again, our six minutes are up, but if you'd like to practise more, you'll soon. But for now, it's goodbye.

显示翻译

好的。再次强调,我们的六分钟时间已经到了,但如果你想练习更多,很快就会有机会。但现在,再见。

Pippa

Bye!

显示翻译

再见!
