Georgie

Hello, this is 6 Minute English from BBC Learning English. I'm Georgie.

显示翻译

你好,这是 BBC Learning English 的 6 分钟英语。我是 Georgie。

Phil

And I'm Phil. Did you have any breakfast today, Georgie, or did you skip it?

显示翻译

我是 Phil。今天早上你吃早餐了吗,Georgie,还是你跳过了它?

Georgie

I did have some breakfast. On the way to the office, I got myself a pastry and a coffee. What about you?

显示翻译

我吃了。在去办公室的路上,我给自己买了一个糕点和一杯咖啡。你呢?

Phil

I had a big bowl of porridge, but it was at six o'clock this morning so I'm hungry again now. And you might soon be hungry as well because we're going to talk about breakfast. How important is it? Let's start by hearing from Professor Alexandra Johnstone, a nutrition scientist who spoke to Ruth Alexander, host of BBC World Service programme The Food Chain.

显示翻译

Phil:我吃了一大碗粥,但那是早上六点吃的,所以我现在又饿了。而且你可能很快也会饿了,因为我们要谈论早餐。早餐有多重要?让我们先听听营养科学家 Alexandra Johnstone 教授对 BBC World Service 节目 The Food Chain 的主持人 Ruth Alexander 的看法。

Professor Alexandra Johnstone

I am supporting the meme 'breakfast like a king and dine like a pauper'.

显示翻译

Alexandra Johnstone 教授:我支持这个说法‘早餐像国王一样吃,晚餐像穷人一样吃’。

Ruth Alexander

For you then, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

显示翻译

Ruth Alexander:对你来说,早餐是一天中最重要的一餐。

Professor Alexandra Johnstone

I agree. So, it's really important, particularly for people who are trying to maintain a healthy weight and people who are trying to lose weight.

显示翻译

Alexandra Johnstone 教授:我同意。所以,它真的很重要,尤其是对于试图保持健康体重和试图减肥的人来说。

Phil

Alexandra says that you should 'breakfast like a king and dine like a pauper'. Pauper is an old-fashioned word for a very poor person. The expression means have a big breakfast and a small dinner.

显示翻译

Phil:Alexandra 说你应该‘早餐像国王一样吃,晚餐像穷人一样吃’。Pauper 是一个非常贫穷的人的古老说法。这个表达的意思是吃一顿丰盛的早餐和一顿简单的晚餐。

Georgie

We're going to find out some of the reasons that Alexandra and other experts recommend doing this.

显示翻译

Georgie:我们将找出一些 Alexandra 和其他专家推荐这样做的原因。

Phil

And as usual, we'll learn some useful new words and phrases. And remember –

显示翻译

Phil:像往常一样,我们将学习一些有用的新单词和短语。记住——

Georgie

OK. But first I have a question for you, Phil. According to a recent survey, which of the following is the most popular breakfast in the UK? Is it: a) eggs, b) toast, or c) cereal?

显示翻译

Georgie:好的。但首先我有一个问题要问你,Phil。根据最近的一项调查,以下哪一项是英国最受欢迎的早餐?是 a) 鸡蛋,b) 面包,还是 c) 谷物?

Phil

Well, I think people like to keep it simple so I'm going to say toast.

显示翻译

Phil:我想人们喜欢保持简单,所以我猜是面包。

Georgie

OK. Well, we'll find out the answer later in the programme. Let's hear some reasons for why we should breakfast like a king or queen. Courtney Peterson, who researches eating behaviours, explains how the time of day affects how our bodies process food, on BBC World Service programme The Food Chain:

显示翻译

Georgie:好的。嗯,我们稍后会在节目中找到答案。让我们听听为什么我们应该像国王或王后一样吃早餐。研究饮食习惯的 Courtney Peterson 解释了一天中的时间如何影响我们的身体处理食物的方式,在 BBC World Service 节目 The Food Chain 中:

Courtney Peterson

And so, if you can eat a large breakfast in the morning, and/or I would even say a large lunch in the morning, your body's going to be better at metabolising that food. And what that means is your body's going to actually… your blood sugar levels won't spike as high, you might burn slightly more fat, you might burn slightly more calories from eating earlier in the day. Whereas if you had… if you eat most of your food later in the day, your metabolism is actually slower later in the day. So, for instance, if you ate the same, I don't know, bowl of ice cream in the morning, the afternoon and the evening, your blood sugar levels will spike significantly higher in the afternoon and the evening.

显示翻译

Courtney Peterson:因此,如果你能在早上吃一顿丰盛的早餐,甚至可以说在早上吃一顿丰盛的午餐,你的身体将更好地代谢这些食物。这意味着你的身体实际上……你的血糖水平不会升高那么多,你可能会燃烧更多的脂肪,你可能会从早上吃到的食物中燃烧更多的卡路里。而如果你在……如果你在下午和晚上吃同样的,我不知道,一碗冰淇淋,你的血糖水平在下午和晚上会显著升高。

Phil

We heard the noun metabolism. This is a word that refers to the chemical processes in your body, and we most often use it to talk about those that convert food into energy. And we also heard had the verb form – metabolise.

显示翻译

Phil:我们听到了名词 metabolism。这个词指的是你体内的化学过程,我们通常用它来谈论那些将食物转化为能量的过程。我们还听到了动词形式 - metabolise。

Georgie

Courtney talked about blood sugar levels spiking. A spike is a sharp, pointed shape. If you see it on a line graph, it means that something has increased very rapidly. We often use the noun spike to mean a sudden increase in a value that is being measured. The verb spike means to suddenly increase.

显示翻译

Georgie:Courtney 谈到了血糖水平急剧上升。Spike 是一个尖锐的形状。如果你在折线图上看到它,这意味着某物已经非常迅速地增加了。我们经常用名词 spike 来指代被测量的值突然增加。动词 spike 的意思是突然增加。

Phil

We've heard that eating earlier in the day can be healthier for us. Now, people often don't eat breakfast, sometimes because they don't have time and sometimes because they are trying to save money. Let's hear again from Professor Alexandra Johnstone, talking to BBC World Service's The Food Chain.

显示翻译

Phil:我们已经听说,早上吃东西对我们来说可能更健康。现在,人们有时不吃早餐,有时是因为没有时间,有时是因为他们试图省钱。让我们再次听听 Professor Alexandra Johnstone 的看法,她在 BBC World Service 的 The Food Chain 中谈到:

Professor Alexandra Johnstone

Now, breakfast skipping is interesting because my own work would tend to suggest – and that sort of observational, large-scale, epidemiological studies would also support this – that people who have a regular breakfast are actually leaner. And my own work would tend to suggest that having your largest meal of the day in the morning period gives you a much better appetite control, which then means it's much easier to control food intake later in the day.

显示翻译

Alexandra Johnstone 教授:现在,跳过早餐很有趣,因为我的研究工作往往会表明——而且这种观察性的、大规模的、流行病学的调查也会支持这一点——有规律吃早餐的人实际上更瘦。我的研究工作往往会表明,在早上吃你一天中最大的一餐会给你更好的食欲控制,这意味着控制食物摄入量就更容易了。

Georgie

Alexandra starts by mentioning 'breakfast skipping'. If you skip something, then you don't do it. Bad students might skip lessons – they don't go to them. If you skip a meal, it means that you don't eat it.

显示翻译

Georgie:Alexandra 首先提到了‘跳过早餐’。如果你跳过某件事,那么你就不做它。坏学生可能会跳过课程——他们不去上课。如果你跳过一餐,这意味着你没有吃它。

Phil

We also heard that people who have a regular breakfast are leaner. If someone is lean, then they're not fat.

显示翻译

Phil:我们还听说,有规律吃早餐的人更瘦。如果某人很瘦,那么他们不胖。

Georgie

And one of the reasons given why people might be leaner is that they have better appetite control. Appetite control is where your brain decides how much you should eat.

显示翻译

Georgie:给出的一个原因是因为他们有更好的食欲控制。食欲控制是指你的大脑决定你应该吃多少。

Phil

Thanks, Georgie. Now, I think it's time that we heard the answer to your question.

显示翻译

Phil:谢谢,Georgie。现在,我想是时候回答你的问题了。

Georgie

Yes, it is. OK. I asked, "According to a recent survey, what is the most popular breakfast in the UK?"

显示翻译

Georgie:是的,是时候了。我问道,‘根据最近的一项调查,以下哪一项是英国最受欢迎的早餐?’

Phil

And I said, "Toast."

显示翻译

Phil:我说,‘面包。’

Georgie

…which was the most popular in London, but the most popular in the country as a whole was cereal, and that's according to a survey by a cereal manufacturer. So, I'm afraid you got it wrong. OK. Let's recap the vocabulary we've learned, starting with pauper, which is an old-fashioned word for a very poor person.

显示翻译

Georgie:……在伦敦是最受欢迎的,但整个国家最受欢迎的是谷物,这是根据一家谷物制造商的调查。所以,很抱歉,你答错了。好的。让我们回顾一下我们学到的词汇,从 pauper 开始,这是一个非常贫穷的人的古老说法。

Phil

When we're talking about data, it spikes when it increases suddenly.

显示翻译

Phil:当我们谈论数据时,它会突然增加。

Georgie

Metabolism refers to the chemical processes inside your body, especially those which process food.

显示翻译

Georgie:Metabolism 指的是你体内的化学过程,特别是那些处理食物的过程。

Phil

If you skip something, you miss it; you don't do it.

显示翻译

Phil:如果你跳过某件事,你错过了它;你不做它。

Georgie

If someone is lean, then they are not fat.

显示翻译

Georgie:如果某人很瘦,那么他们不胖。

Phil

And finally, appetite control is how your brain decides how much you should eat. Once again, our six minutes are up, but why not head over to our website, again soon.

显示翻译

Phil:最后,食欲控制是指你的大脑决定你应该吃多少。

Georgie

Goodbye!

显示翻译

Georgie:再次提醒,我们的六分钟时间到了,但为什么不去我们的网站看看,很快就会再来的。

Phil

Bye!

显示翻译

Georgie:再见!
