This Hormone May Explain Why Exercise Helps the Brain

Exercise is good for our body and brain. Scientists are studying why. They are looking at a hormone called irisin, which muscles make when we exercise. An Australian study watched older adults do strength training. They watched 24 adults over 65 during a 12-week strength training program. They measured irisin in their blood before, during, and after exercise. They also tested their memory and how quickly they could say words. After the first workout, the irisin levels went up a lot. But after 12 weeks, the levels didn't change. But the memory of the participants got better, and their words were faster at the end. This means that even a little bit of exercise can help our brain stay healthy.
